Overview
Vision: To produce the bright young Professionals of Mechanical Engineering Sciences by providing excellent Teaching Learning Facilities with entrepreneurial skills for meeting the societal needs.
Mission: 1. To develop professional attitude so that the students may develop and sustain their skills as Mechanical Engineer.
2. To provide Mechanical Engineering Expertise to Industry, government and society.
3. To make good human beings possessing Professional Ethics.
4. To make responsible citizens with social commitment to foster Research and attitude for development.
5. To participate in all round development of the region.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at NIT Agartala is one of the largest and oldest Departments of the Institute that gratifies to its students with top class teaching-learning facility and state-of-the-art laboratories. The Department is continuously striving to achieve excellence in education, academic and industry oriented research as well as consultancy work with service to the society in particular and the nation in greater extent.
To achieve the vision, the Department strives to generate high quality graduates through rigorous coursework, adopting industry oriented course structure and cutting-edge research activities to address the societal problems, regional growth through innovative thinking for developing appropriate technological solutions. The Department has highly qualified and well experienced faculty members with a blend of academic and R&D exposure. Academic course work and projects are designed to provide students with the ability to apply science, mathematics and engineering, blended with ethics along with the capability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, providing leadership and technical expertise. In recent years many of our graduates have further upgraded their career (apart from satisfactory placements in renowned companies) in top IIM/ Management Institute and higher studies in renowned Foreign Universities. This certainly proves the versatility of our graduates which we achieved through our constant efforts to enrich the standard of technical education.
To add a feather in the cap, the UG program of the Department has been reaccredited by The National Board of Accreditation. This is the second time the Department has been accredited continuously since 2013. The Post graduate Programs in Thermal Science & Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Machine Design, Automotive Engineering and Material Science & Engineering have been designed in such a way so as to align the academic course work with research, to prepare scholars in specialized areas within the field of Mechanical Engineering with a deep focus on industrial requirement.
In addition to the regular academic work, the students of the Department are also encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities. Over the years, the Department has acquired massive infrastructure in all laboratories and workshop.
The Department also encourages active research activity for carrying out collaborative and inter-disciplinary research. The Department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. Faculty members with excellent academic credentials have been engaged in research activities that have helped them to achieve awards at national and international levels. Several faculty members serve on the editorial boards of national and international journals, review technical articles for journals on a regular basis, and organize international symposia and conferences. Thousands of Alumni of this Department, who are well placed in different Industry, Organization, National and International Companies, PSUs, top Administrative positions and Business have always supported and helped the Department and its future engineers continuously with their expertise, inputs for betterment and offering training and placement scopes. The Mechanical Engineering Department has strong commitment for the Overall Development of the students and the continuous progress of the Nation.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
PEO-1: To empower students to identify, formulate and solve Mechanical Engineering problems by applying their knowledge in the field of Mathematics, Science, Communication and Computing skills and enabling them to understand specific problem areas and finding the optimum solutions for the same.
PEO-2: To widen the talents of the students to become effective collaborators and innovators, leading in efforts to tackle social, business, design and production challenges.
PEO-3: To develop industry focused skills and leadership qualities to become successful engineers and entrepreneurs.
PEO-4: To enable students to acquire skills to communicate effectively with the society and the constituents which enable them to collaborate as team members and team leaders.
PEO-5: To instill professional work ethics and social responsibilities.
PEO-6: To encourage the students for developing life-long learning attitude with moral ethics and values and professional development through higher study, continuing education and Independent research activities.

PSO 1: Specification, fabrication, testing, operation or documentation of basic mechanical systems/processes.
PSO 2: Analysis, design, development and implementation of more advanced mechanical systems or processes.
